Sometime in the last few years while touring our live score for Yasujirō Ozu’s DRAGNET GIRL the members of Coupler ruminated on a future release. We’d recently done a handful of non-film shows, sometimes as a duo, sometimes as a trio, that we referred to as our “strictly bangers” sets. They were typically uptempo four-on-the-floor affairs. We talked about making a record in this vein.
For various reasons that full-length never came to be. But during quarantine I’ve had occasion to revisit this idea. Taking some incomplete tracks we’d intended to be part of that possible album I hammered them into this new, abbreviated package. “The Rhythm Method” is meant to be narrowly-focused and will be the first in a series of EPs. Rather than wrestle with a sizable amount of accumulated music and try to form it into what could become a sprawling and potentially incoherent mess I thought it best to prune each of the constituent parts into something more approachable. In this case, though some of the music is different, I was hoping to capture the spirit of those “strictly bangers” sets. I hope I got close.
